Step by step tutorial for how to make a sheet cake!

Switching from round layer cakes to a rectangle cakes isn’t as daunting as it may seem
And with a few professional tips and tricks on how to make a perfect sheet cake and some basic cake decorating tools you will be amazed at how easy it can be!

Bakery Style Sheet Cake

 

I’ve decided to use my famous bakery style yellow cake today

With a double filling of chocolate buttercream and a layer of fudge filling!
Of course you can use whatever recipes you like the most and I have archives for Icings and Fillings   as well as all the cake recipes which convert beautifully into sheet cakes

Rule of Thumb for converting cake recipes:

If your recipe makes two nice thick 8″ layers it will equally make one perfect half sized sheet pan, otherwise known as the 12″ x 18″ pan
In the video tutorial I explain that I always prefer to bake in a half sheet pan then cut it in half for two equal 1/4 sheet pan layers
But you can also divide that same amount of batter into two 1/4 sheet pans instead

  • 1 Recipe Yellow Cake
  • 2 x Recipe Buttercream
  • ½ Recipe Fudge

    You should take a photo of this beautiful VEGAN cake creation (even on the upside down pan cake board substitute- which makes your cake colors brighter) and print it on the cover of your website, your next book, and aprons or t-shirts!

    Do you have a recipe for the chocolate icing you use for the skinny decorating?

      I’m not sure what you mean by “skinny decorating” but I will assume you mean the scroll work & writing? in Which case That’s just pure melted chocolate

    Hi Gretchen! Great video. Do you have suggestions for how to make this ahead of time? Can you fully decorate the cake a day or two before and event, and if so, how would you recommend storing it?

      Hey thank you. Yes you can definitely make this one a day or two ahead. Refrigerate it & then bring it to room temperature before serving (typically the amount of time it takes to get to the event & display it for several hours makes it perfect for serving)

        Awesome! Thanks for your prompt response! Would your lower sugar buttercream work for a sheet cake like this and would it hold up for one day ahead in the fridge?
